R.I.P. Miree New 15.6.1959 - 16.2.2011

Miree New arrived with her family in Indonesia in early 2000. It didn’t take Miree long to fall in love with Indonesia. In her first few years in Jakarta she worked for a travel company and took clients on excursions in Kalimantan to see the orangutan habitats. In 2003 she joined Santa Fe where she spent the remaining years of her life, assisting newcomers to Jakarta to settle in. On the 16th February 2011, whilst Miree was in hospital diagnosed with Typhoid, she suddenly developed an onset of complications and which quickly claimed her life. During her life and her time in Indonesia, Miree’s devotion to her family and friends, her willingness to help her friends in need, give advice and support when needed, touched the lives of so many. She loved Indonesia and its people and it fitting that this is where she left us. Her presence will be missed dearly. We will update this site once arrangements are known for her farewell wake. Do feel free to leave your messages to Miree and condolences for her family here. Email to mireefamily@gmail.com to submit a letter.

  5. a strong, larger than life woman who called things as she saw it. I respected her and liked her for who is was. Condolences to Miree's family and to the rest of her friends she impacted as she did me. You are missed already.

  6. Miree will be dearly missed. Such a strong but down to earth woman. (True to her Kiwi nature) Someone who seemed to be supporting every group or association by being at each function or event. But not just being there, she was always involved. Loved to dress up, join in or help out.

So loyal to her work and always extremely busy, that she seemed to have little time for herself. Thriving on this type of life by becoming an character of the Jakarta expat community. Everyone knew Miree from Santa Fe, who was truly one of the city's icons. A city that she loved.

Miree loved life in Jakarta and loved the people. Even though she went before her time I'm sure she is happy that Jakarta was her ultimate home away from home.

Rest in peace Miree it won't be the same around here without you.

  12. What can one say. A very tragic and very very sad loss to us all. I first met Miree when I was working a the NZ Embassy in Jakarta when her and her family arrrived in early 2000. We became great friends in the last five years I was in Jakarta. She spent so much time and support in helping us raise funds through our Kiwi Drinks events that the Embassy would hold, for charity. She was the life and sole of any event. We were close friends and she was a devoted friend,. To Miree's family, I know only too well what you are feeling right now. I lost my darling George in 2006 to Cancer. This is a time to remember, a time to forgive and a time to love those around us who are feeling pain at this time in such a tragic loss. Miree my darling, you will always be remembered.

  13. Well I woke up in Brisbane this morning, read the news of Miree and woke up again! To all family, friends, work colleges and associates my sincerest condolences.
Miree always had time to stop and chat and we shared a few drinks, around Jakarta. I'm sure Miree will continue on the next part of her journey, bringing joy and happiness to those around her. Her story and life has a lot in common with mine, so its a good wake up for the priority of living.
I leave for Sydney to see my kids tomorrow then Perth and Jakarta, too late for the ceremony but send my regards to all who attend and know Miree.

I offer my sincere condolences to all your family and friends. Rest in Peace, beautiful lady.

  22. I am not even sure where to begin. This came as a complete shock to me and I cannot believe the events of February 16th. All I can think of is that Miree will bounce right back up with that one-of-a-kind smile, that we all loved her for, and say “just kidding all”. I have known Miree since her first days with Santa Fe and there was no one more committed to her colleagues, friends and family. Always full of life and more often than not, she was the life of the party.
To her family, colleagues and friends let me extend my most sincere condolences for your lost.
Miree, you will always be remembered. Rest in peace my dear friend.

  25. Miree has been my work companion since I arrived back in Jakarta in 2004. She has been an invaluable companion for me as we dealt with daily highs and lows of our business. Outside of work she was a good friend and someone that you could count on for help when you need it. A beautiful light in Jakarta has flickered out and Jakarta glows more dimly with her no longer with us. Her physical presence will no longer be felt but the memory of her will survive a very long time. Rest in Peace dear Miree.

  31. Dear Stephanie, Cameron, Alistair and family

Deepest condolences don’t quite seem to convey the message.

Wherever Miree went, she lit up the room with her infectious smile, big heart, boundless energy & zest for life. Miree was a rare force of nature! Taken too soon with so many more things on her to do list, so much joy yet to share, her light still shines in all of our hearts. I will miss your mother. She was a great lady and an inspiration.

I hope you know that Miree was so very proud of you all. Her eyes always shone with an extra bright sparkle whenever she spoke of you. I’m sure that she will always be looking down on you with pride and joy at each step you take on your own life journey until the time comes to meet again.

Cameron, before your mom left for your graduation, we had made a plan that I would give her a little something for you as a gift but it was so busy for both of us that we didn’t have a chance to meet. I would really still like to send you something as it was a promise that I would like to keep in her memory. Just in case we don’t meet, please let me know where I can send it.

If there is anything at all I can do for your family, please let me know. I know without a doubt that Miree would be offering up everything & anything if it were my family in this position.

Our love and prayers are with you.

  34. I have only just heard the news about Miree's sad passing and an still in shock just now.

I just moved to Jakarta six weeks ago with my husband and three children from Sydney and Miree managed a valet unpack service for us. I spent a full day and a half with Miree only two weeks ago and really enjoyed her company. We chatted the whole time about so many things. She was so endearing, open and warm...I wanted to pass on my warmest regards to her family at this difficult time.

We kept in touch after the move via email and SMS and she also dropped in a couple of days after the unpack to pass on a card folder she had compiled especially for me with every possible contact I may need during my stay. She passed on all her personal favourites that we had talked about during the unpack - from her favourite hairdresser, food suppliers, dressmaker, fabric suppliers etc - she even offered to share her staff with me. She did mention that she had been unwell recently and I encouraged her to rest during the day.

Miree bought her own household staff to work here all day for the unpack and they started early in the morning (7.30am!) to help me get the bulk of the work done before my young children came home from school.

I hope you are all managing ok at this difficult time and you should be very proud of Miree - she was such a wonderful inspiring supportive woman.

    Warmest Regards
    Mel McNamara
